Bloom Behavior offers Verbal Behavior Therapy, also known as Applied Verbal Behavior (AVB). It is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and the theories of behaviorist B.F. Skinner.

Through Verbal Behavior Therapy, we encourage people with autism and other developmental delays to learn language by connecting words with their purposes. We do not focus on words as labels; instead, we teach children why words are used and how they can be used to communicate ideas and make requests.

Verbal Behavior Therapy focuses on four core word types:

  • Tact: A comment that is used to draw attention or share an experience.
  • Mand: A request, such as saying “Candy”, to ask for a candy.
  • Echoic: An echoed or repeated word.
  • Intraverbal: A word used to answer or respond to a question.

Note: Verbal Behavior methods may be combined with ABA therapy to work towards communication and language goals.
